Faroukh Shah

Architect Luna Rajab, an active member of the Friends of Damascus Association, is supervising the renovation of Faroukh Shah Mosque, which is now inside the vicinity of the Four Seasons Hotel. The mosque is being renovated according to the highest standards and will still be in use after the Hotel opens, Rajab says. Faroukh Shah was the nephew of Saladin and the Emir of Baalbek (Lebanon) for a short period of time. He led many battles against the Crusaders and defeated the army of Baldwin IV, Latin King of Jerusalem, near Banyas (Western Syria) in 1179.

Thanks ayman,I remember praying in that mosque before that hotel and truly it was like traveling through time.

As usual more interesting facts from Damascus' history conveyed by Ayman to all of us who read his blog! Just for clarification though is the actual name Faruq (which is Arabic) or Faroukh (which is Farsi)?

Thanks Annie, Faraz, Bashar and everybody for your kind comments.

Faraz, the name is Farroukh not Farouq or Farouk. In Arabic it's spelled as one word with Shah, thus it's probably Farsi or 'Ajami. I just found out that in many English texts, it's spelled as Farrukh Shah. Try to Google the word, and you'll find out that the name also belonged to a King of Kabul and other non-Arab historical figures.

Praktike, yes I take the photos myself.

Great blog..
Indeed it was a golden time and a humble great man. I wish I had the chance to live that time instead of this rotten time and age.

Oops! Sorry, and you were one of my fathers students too!
I thought you were an archeologist. I don't know how it came to my mind!
I am sorry again..

Thank you Luna for this information (I will try to fix this Arabic coding problem so everyone can read it). I had the pleasure of taking part in the tour you guided in Al-Qanawat and I listened to your thorough explanation about the renovation of the Mosque, which is luckily being done professionally, unlike many renovation projects in Damascus. I Hope to see you again soon :)

From Luna
dont worry amr , never mind I do have a diploma in archeologie so I'm also an archeologist, and I just wanted to say that the restoration of the historical monuments is the job of an architect with a degree in restoration.
thank you
